SDG 2: End hunger, achieve food security and promote sustainable agriculture
Zambia
The tragedy of malnutrition still affects a large number of people at global level, in spite of efforts to fight this issue. Almost 800 million people, including many women and children, are estimated to suffer daily from the lack of adequate, nourishing food.
Hydroponic gardens in Zambia are an example of the emerging innovations adopted to face this challenge. The state-of-the-art agricultural technique of hydroponic gardens allows to grow plants without the traditional soil, through the use of nutritional solutions in a controlled environment.
Moreover, this technique reduces dependence on soil conditions and seasons, ensuring a constant flow of fresh and nourishing produces. This is key to improving food security of rural and urban communities, thus contributing to ensure that people have access to healthy food throughout the year.
The lower pressure on natural resources is another important benefit. Since hydroponic gardens require less water and soil with respect to traditional agriculture, they help to safeguard the environment and avoid soil degradation.
