SDG 1: Fight against poverty >
SDG 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere
Central America, Guatemala
More than 30,000 people live in the Zone 3 landfill in Ciudad del Guatemala in extreme poverty, relying on the garbage the city discards to survive.
There are about 3 billion people in the world who reside in urban areas and produce 1.3 billion tons of solid waste each year. Considering the urgency imposed by climate change, reducing waste is essential. Yet, there are people in the world who not only live among the waste, but even rely on it to survive.
The phenomenon of communities living in landfills is increasing in several countries of Central America.
The goal set by SDG 1, namely reducing poverty, requires international synergies. Education is the most effective solution in the fight against poverty and the only way for people to emerge from depressed socio-economic contexts. Projects such as the street schools in Haiti can positively influence the future of entire generations.
